An Ancient Crystal is an item which could be created using a Magic Altar, and could be used to create several powerful magical tools. It is currently unused, though is planned to be reintroduced in the future.
Obtaining
Currently, an Ancient Crystal cannot be obtained without the use of commands. Previously, it could be obtained by right-clicking on a Magic Altar while holding a Nether Star, and having one of each of the Elemental Runes in the player's hotbar.
Each of the runes had to be in the proper slot in order to create an Ancient Crystal. The proper configuration was as follows:

Ancient Rune

Fire Rune

Water Rune

Slot 6:
Air Rune
Once obtained, it could be used to create either a Mage Staff or a
Mage Book.
