Interested in joining the staff team at Chaotic United? Not quite sure what to expect? You've come to the right place.
This document outlines what we expect of our staff team, and what you can expect as being part of our team. While each position will have differing duties, the expectations outlined below generally apply to all staff members, regardless of position, unless otherwise stated.
If you're looking to join our Build Team, you will also want to read over the Build Team Expectations page as well, which contains additional expectations that pertain specifically to the Builder position.
What To Expect
First, what should you expect as a part of our team?
Compensation
Currently, all staff positions are volunteer-only, and do not receive financial compensation in exchange for staff duties. While we'd love to change this someday, this currently is simply not feasible for a variety of reasons. We do limit what we expect and ask as a result of this - but do keep this in mind before applying.
Environment and Culture
Our staff environment is far from what most would consider professional. While we do strive for professional quality on our various services and projects, we're generally quite laid back in terms of how we communicate as a team. This means banter, jokes, and the same kind of communication you'll find us use in the public eye - though we also expect that this be restrained when need be, such as during any sort of serious discussion or meeting.
Promotions
Every now and then, staff members starting on the lower-end of the ranks can find their way up into higher positions. This might be a Helper moving up to Moderator, or a Moderator moving up to Manager.
These promotions are not based on tenure, and are not guaranteed to any staff member - rather, if a need arises for such a position, and you happen to be found qualified and of sufficient character to handle such responsibility, you could potentially be offered such a position.
Staff Team Expectations
Now, let's turn this around - let's go over what we expect from you as part of our team.
Activity
While we do not currently have any specific activity requirements, we do expect some baseline level of activity within the community as needed to perform essential duties, as well as maintain communication with other members of the team.
As a general sort of bare-minimum threshold, we expect staff members to remain within our Discord server, unless taking a temporary leave as outlined later on. This ensures that staff members are able to keep up-to-date on significant updates to the community, game servers, and internal staff-specific announcements. If you are absent from the Discord server for an extended period of time without any communication or explanation given to an administrator, this may result in termination from the staff team.
Temporary Leaves
Sometimes, stuff happens, and you need to temporarily step back from your role on the team. We get it, and we're happy to accommodate this.
If you are a staff member and need to take a temporary leave, simply reach out to an administrator and let them know. As long as it's not an excessively long duration, we are generally happy to accomodate. For longer durations of inactivity (such as many months or a year), however, you may be terminated from the staff team instead, and be required to re-apply later on - though this is not a hard rule, and we generally handle this on a case-by-case basis.
If you leave for an extended length of time without any prior communication, you may also be at risk of being removed from the staff team. In the case of an emergency where you are unable to communicate the leave beforehand, as long as you communicate with us within a reasonable length of time afterwards about this, then we again are happy to accommodate this as best we can.
Behavior
As a staff member, we do not have any particular behavioral requirements or expectations, other than adherence to the community guidelines which apply to everyone regardless. However, violations of these guidelines may be enforced more strongly towards staff members, as they are held to a higher standard behaviorally than what would be expected of a typical member.
Bullying, harassment, and combativeness are not tolerated within our staff team, and will result in some form of disciplinary action, and repeat violations may result in termination from the staff team.
Behavior Outside the Community
For the most part, we believe that it's none of our business what you do or say outside of the community. As such, we typically won't remove someone from the team based solely on behavior outside of the community - assuming behavior within the community is good.
This may potentially not apply in cases where this behavior crosses over into the community, or if behavior outside of the community results in negative attention being brought onto us.
Creative Vision and Feedback
We value feedback - both from our community and our team. However, we believe it is also important to have a singular creative vision driving what we do - particularly when it comes to things such as our Minecraft server. What this means is that, while we value and consider any and all feedback, we make no guarantees that anything and everything suggested will be implemented - in order to ensure we maintain a clear and cohesive vision for the community.
As a part of our team, while you are encouraged to voice your opinion - both privately and publicly - we also expect you to, at the end of the day, stand with us and stand behind our vision, even if you find yourself disagreeing with it. A house divided amongst itself cannot stand - and a team that has deep disagreements about how to move forward can't work together effectively.
We do not have any requirements in terms of promoting or advertising the community. If you're interested in doing so responsibly (such as posting on forums, Discord servers, or other areas online where such advertisement is permitted), you are free to do so - but not required - after receiving administrator approval.
Under no circumstance should advertising be done on other communities or servers where it is forbidden (such as other Minecraft server chats) or undesirable. Additionally, the community should not be advertised in places that may bring undesired traffic - such as adult websites, 'toxic' communities, and so on.
Other Servers
While there are no restrictions on staff participating and playing on other game servers or in other communities, there are restrictions on staffing for other servers. In general, this is entirely prohibited - if you're on our staff team, we expect you not to be staff on any other competing community (such as any other community which offers overlapping services as ours).
If it is discovered that you are staff on another competing community, you will be required to resign from your staff position on the other community - or you will be removed from staff here. Essentially, you'll be required to choose - us, or them.
This is in order to ensure that staff member's attention is not spread excessively thin between other communities. We have to protect our best interests - ensuring that our hard work, property, data, and so on are kept safely with us - and that you aren't using your positions on both communities to sabotage one or both of them, and prevents any possible conflicts of interest.
This does not apply to online communities not deemed in competition with us (such as communities which do not offer any competing services as ours). It also does not necessarily apply to partnered communities, though this may vary on a case-by-case basis.
Internal Discussion Privacy
As a staff member, you will have access to a variety of team-only resources - including private Discord channels and subforums, Stratagem (an internal board used for tracking progress on our services), and more. You'll also often become aware of upcoming or planned features within the community far earlier than the public.
As a staff member, you are expected to keep such information private - unless you know for a fact that it's been shared publicly before. Distributing or leaking any of this private information to the public will typically result in termination from the team.
