  1. Report Denied,

This thread will now be closed. We only accused you of griefing, due to being someone that executed a // command.

    Whoops wrong racist incident ._.

    To the point

Nobody was being racist towards you in a harssing way, they were trying to do it in a jokingly way. If this happens again contact a staff member, because as of right now we are unable to find crediable evidence.

  2. Residents probably is broken due to the update to 1.8.3

I've given X6er a 1 day suspension from accessing the server. We don't tolerate griefing,

Sorry I misread his message. ._.

I'll look into a grefing prevent tool that others can use, most likely I'll just find an update for Residents.

    Sorry for this incident.

  3. Everybody probably realized that the installation took longer then expected. 5 Hours off from what I expected.

After I finished last night I realized that the Distribution I meant to use was Mageia 5 (which is currently in beta) and I used Mageia 4.1

I've really made my reputation in this community go down, like I'm the bad guy who wants to cause as much server downtime as possible. That or I suck as a server technician. I admit I have caused alot of downtime and without my presence last week everything ran smoothly with a half hour of downtime. The reason for that was that the server wasn't being hosted on the same machine. I put it on a temp server due to me running out of time to configure decent administration capabilities while I was gone. So I got out another server that was was configured already and could take many hits without compromising much time while I was away. The only downside is that in the house it is extremely loud. Since nobody was in the house, that wasn't an issue. But immediately after I got back I had to finish configuring the server (Which I did). However the lack of any administration of the server console was an issue so I've been working on securing OpenSSL and OpenSSH to prevent any catastrophic damage exploited by SSH. I spent 2 days trying to configure it, which had many hours of downtime between or whenever I broke OpenSSH. For those who don't know, if you try to remove OpenSSL or OpenSSH you break the Windows system for CentOS. I didn't know that until the server crashed last Saturday. I attempted this a couple of times not wanting to abandon CentOS 7, but I didn't want to compromise our security. So I took the hit yesterday and caused more downtime to install Mageia.

But Yesterday was nothing more then walking around in circles trying figuring out why I was getting a kernal error, turns out that Rufus (The Program I use to mount ISOs) didn't work with Mageia and I had to use a program I never used before. But before I figured that out   I tried doing it on a different machine and got the same results.

Once I figured that out I had already wasted at least 3 hours.

Here is the time log of Yesterdays Maintenance

Downloading ISO's (1 ISO three times) 2nd Caused by Mounting Error and 3rd out of suspicion of the ISO being corrupted:

    1 Hour and 30 min

Mounting ISO's with Rufus: 1 hour and 30 minutes

Hardware Maintenance: 45 Minutes (Because some cables became undone, but I couldnt figure out which so I had to unplug and plug everything back in.

Debugging Installation/ Time Wasted Over incorrect installations: 4 Hours

    Actual Installation: 50 Minutes

As a result of this, I will be taking the server offline once again at 10: 30PM or earlier (Probably Earlier Like 6:30) Since I am familar with Mageia's installation process and now know how to properly mount the files this update shall only take an hour and 30 minutes maximum.

Probably won't believe me and I don't blame you all for that.

The server will not go down until after the ISO is mounted, properly.

The only other downtime that I can think of past today is the one on Friday where I have to migrate the DBServer from the VPS.

    Thanks,

    Michael/ AwakenedRage

  4. With the new DDoS protection, IP's are no longer accurate. All players appear under the same IP. This is a big issue and chances are banning will now have to be done via the firewall for IP bans on the DDoS protection vendors site.I will try to see what else can be done.

  5. As Users have been noticing the significant decrease in server performance and technicians have been struggling to patch an openssl and openssh exploits. We have decided that CentOS 7 has become unreliable for our current server environment and are abandoning it  today at 5:30PM CST in favor of Mageia 4.1.

This will significantly decrease the complexity of configuring the servers and will be up to date and will improve performance.

The Server should be up before 7, but I'll say 7:30PM just to be safe.

This is in attempt to improve performance and decrease downtime.

  6. Hi all, tomorrow evening and half of Saturday Chaotic United's servers will be down for maintenance for server migration.

This is to move our servers to our main server machine instead of the temporary one that was used while I was at vacation.

This includes the DBServer that we used due to the operating system for the old DBServer getting corrupted.

We used a different machine originally because one of the servers had a rootkit planted on the hard drive. This rootkit crippled many servers
and was nearly impossible to detect including many big companies such as Google.

It is noted that we have decided to classify this as a form of protest and did not ban the people involved.
This was a form of protest to get the exploit fixed on our servers and I appreciate that someone gave me the push that security issues need to be taken care of immediately. I've been in this position with big companies such as DIsney and have intentionally overloaded their servers before. This was on a kids site and alot of different people felt it should be more seucre, however Disney did not want to fix it so we had to make it a problem. This scenario fits very well with our incident on Saturday, with the roles reversed.

I am not a lazy bastard and I just want to clarify I was going to fix it the night that Color (The Attacker) used the exploit. I just wanted to do it at a time nobody was on.

I admit that I am not the best System Administrator, but I'm pretty damn knowledgable for not being certified and self-taught. I am only certified as a developer, but it is normal for a developer to be knowledgable as a System Administrator.

But back to the maintenance, this maintenance also is associated with fixing the disabled services for administrators that were exploited last Saturday, as I did not have enough time to fix it before I left to Florida.

Color has talked about striking back once a month, but by that time, I will be ready for him.

This does not mean we promote hacking, we are just working on developing a way that people can properly use this information that won't negatively affect the servers.

Also be on the lookout for more changes,,

    Have a great weekend,
    AwakenedRage

  7. Hi, you all probably notice that I am not PurpleFreeze, I was contacted urgently after a couple issues popped up that required me to be present. The server has gone down unexpectedly, for unknown reasons at this point.Well, I've confirmed that something has gone wrong at the server location. My own PC was left on to upload alot of stuff and I found out that its no longer uploading anything, even though everything is not present. PurpleFreeze and I go to the same school, but he has lightweight work and wasn't observing the issue, but thanks to the school's tech team. They have blocked the ways we communicate with our servers and we are not able to do anything regarding the server except the forum from school.

Bu the true reason I wrote this post is to inform you that the DBServer has been negatively impacted in some way. I suspect that we have suffered packet loss, however I cannot confirm that is the case due to lack of experience with this issue. I have never seen web traffic measured in negative units before.

    Capture.png

What scares me even more is the fact nobody had the IP except Halo and I and it wasn't ever supposed to be public.

The server will be back up sometime at 3PM Central Time to 3:30

  8. I am currently out of the server center dealing with Midterms and then I am heading straight to Florida on Vacation after.

I know I’m supposed to say that I’ll have limited access to email and Skype won’t be able to respond until I return — but that’s not true. My Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini  will be with me and I can respond if I need to. And I recognize that with this community I’ll probably need to interrupt my vacation from time to time to deal with something urgent.

That said, I promised my mom that I am going to try to disconnect, get away and enjoy our vacation as much as possible. So, I’m going to experiment with something new. I’m going to leave the decision in your hands.

    • If your email truly is urgent and you need a response while I’m on vacation, please resend it to [email protected] and I’ll try to respond to it promptly.
    • If you think someone else at Ruletech Games might be able to help you, feel free to email my Director of Technology, Collin ([email protected]) and he will try to point you in the right direction.
    • If somebody screams "HELP JESUS CHRIST HELP!" and the server goes down, hope someone pulls a nuke and gets it back online within 24 hours before moving to the next step
    • In case the server goes down and nobody pulls a nuke call 219-512-9139 Just note this is a Skype to-go number and is not my actual phone number (Isn't dox worthy :P)
    • During the week I am typically Online at 9:55 to 10:30 during the school days and will usually respond to email at that time.
    • If all else fails, go bitch at MCAnvil at PLAY.MCANVIL.NET

  9. I just want to warn you all about the security difference between all the other services and the Modded Minecraft.

    1) The Modded MC Server doesn't use SSL encryption.

This is critical because all the passwords for Logging in are then sent in plain text and can be found very easily and intercepted by someone.

    2) The Server will potentially crash often.

    3) Java Injection is very easy to do To make the server think that you are logged in.

  10. Please Read the Whole thing before making an assumption.

As you all probably know, last week we tried to resolve things with ND and I told them that they could be held liable for defamation. In reality the only post that threatened us was by Kendev who said that staff from CU were just trying to gain profit for personal gain, when that was not the case. I admit that I did over react when I could of asked politely to stop the false claims that we were using CU for personal gain, when in reality we were not. The staff within RTG started panicking a bit because we could not afford any false accusations of conducting business for profit, due to RTG having non-profit status. Our EIN is extremely important for developer kits and without it, our project would lose multi-platform opportunity. If the EIN is suspended, the project will become less of deal to everyone and the project will most likely  I've worked 2 years on Demoria and we made a lot  of progress since when we first started. But during its development a tragedy occured, one of our teenaged developers in 8th grade passed away from a gas leak in his house. Connor (AKA Pugno) was a developer for the Network Interaction engine that we developed for the game. Connor looked up to me as a role model and the fact I had the chance to work with him gave us both joy. From that day we dedicated the project in his memory and honor. This is relevant to how I reacted because I did not want our 2 years worth of work to go to waste because RTG's gets forcefully dissolved. All the RTG staff know that I hold this project in high esteem , and its very important to me. Any other project manager would say the same thing.Pugno's death always motivated me to overcome any challenge that came to our path, and I rarely messed up. We've had 4 legal cases regarding RTG and our sponsors always sent their legal team to assist us, when needed. I was not involved in a majority of the matter with those legal cases, but I just mentioned those as example proving how we will not end this project easily All I wanted to do was honor my deceased friend, but I acted rashly in the process and it degraded the professionalism of my message and reputation to Nuclear District. But apologizing doesn't get rid of the humiliation that RTG Staff suffered from this incident. I apologize to both the Nuclear District and RTG Staff.

You may be asking Do I wish that I could do this over? Absolutely I do, before that conversation it just appeared they were making false claims right out of the blue with a very vague reason. They made themselves more clear now, but you may be asking what the reason was? They thing we should not be running CU because of their contributions to the community that are being used today. Contributions which aren't even visable in my eyes. I'm not going to comment on that any farther, but I do ask you to not have any first impressions from this 2nd incident with me. I know what my mistakes are, I know  I messed up, I don't expect to receive forgiveness, but an acknowledgement or an indication that we are at least at good terms would be nice.

I've been going back and forth regarding the topic of resigning CU and I just wanted to get all of this off my chest.

    Thanks,

    AwakenedRage

  11. I would get billed for the damage

lol mate you made my night xD basically that computer youre holding need to get fucked up lmao...

and also i've tried to get an admin in my school and it only give me 3 days suspension xD

i wish i can help you mate but we are separated like thousand miles

hold on... you are student from oxford?

I would get billed for severe damage to this laptop, otherwise I would have already done that. As for your other question, I am not from Oxford, I am in a high school in the US. I just looked up a screenshot of the software they use.

  12. hmm... i see... have you tried to disable the antivirus? i dont really recommend sophos... for me its fine since i only used avg, avira and smadav... btw you guys were using vps? old C.U used Dedicated Server isn't it?

The server uses a Super Micro motherboard, so it is dedicated.

The DBServer is what the VPS is temporarily replacing because the OS has to be reinstalled.

    As for the Antivirus

I wouldn't use Sophos if I wasn't forced to. Its a school issued laptop that has Sophos installed.

The server doesn't have sophos, its the computer I'm using SSH to access the server from that has it.

    I don't have Admin.

    So yeah...

  13. check the code back mate? Anyway whats your os? I can installed puTTy here lol i couldn't agree more WINSCP is fucked up lmao good luck then

Ps why not try to create some temp server? Like simple bukkit server? I forgot whats that called tho but i used to make a server back then

Well at the time of my last post, I was in school installing the required dependencies for the VPS. You have to keep in mind that there is no Window system for this VPS and its all terminal. Therefore I have to do everything through terminal and without data entry I found myself quickly unable to do anything until I got home because PuTTY is blocked by Sophos. As for the temp server, I thought Halo had something up. We use CentOS 7 for our servers, the old DB server was Windows Server 2008 R2.

    UPDATE POSTED.

  14. We are currently experiencing a service outage in our  servercenter, which is causing DCE, MySQL, Mumble,MC and email downtime. Our administrators are working on identifying the cause. We will make sure to update this post as soon as we have further information. We apologize for the trouble and appreciate your patience.

Update #1: The Operating System is having issues and has to be reinstalled, we will be setting up a temporary MySQL/MariaDB in the next 10 hours. The server should be back up and running by tomorrow.

Update #2: TEMP VPS bought for Demoria Usage, but for right now it will host CU's DB until the original DBServer is fixed.

Update #3: SFTP has been installed, now MySQL will be installed

Updated #4: MySQL has been installed, but still has to be configured, because my SSH client does not allow data entry. such as Y or N because WINSCP sucks and I cannot use PuTTY on this computer ._.

Update #5: Someone tried to login to the VPS from China 155 times. Wow,

Update #6: MySQL has been configured on the server side. Permissions have to be setup next. Finished 6-7PM

Update #7: Noticed that someone successfully got into an Administrator Account on the Forums. MySQL efforts now put on hold Happened at 7:30PM

Update #8: MySQL Permissions Setup 10PM

Update #9 The database is having trouble importing due to the file being 1.07GB compressed. Efforts will be made later today to import only the required databases instead of all of them in a single contained file.

  15. Last night I meant to reinstall the operating system but never did, the reason is because I was extremely exhausted and the fact the server had quiet down. Tonight the server will be going down for maintenance to ensure future quality assurance. No server health management applications will be added, it is debatable whether bug-tracking will be enabled for the system.

    Planned Server Configuration Changes:

    • The server's player count will be reduced to 70.
    • More Ranks will be added, and some possibly removed to reduce stress on the permission system. To accommodate for Demoria System Administrators being able to administrate if needed.
    • Plugins that are unused, will be removed. Particularly the Clockwork Planter plugin.
    • Backups now scheduled automatically by the system.
    • Amount of Memory used will be decreased. to give the system some ram to use for file transfers.
    • EPEL will be installed correctly
    • RPM Forge will be installed correctly

If lag still occurs then more changes may occur.

    *SUBJECT TO CHANGE

  16. CU will continue to run, because I'm already used to these type's of events and won't be as affected as you are. This is due to the fact that this isn't my first experience regarding a fatality or a death of someone close.  One of our developer's as you might know passed away last August, and with his parents partially blaming me for the incident (because I could of prevented it, if I gave someone else the extra work I gave him that day he would of been somewhere else) , I know exactly how your feeling right now. It took me 2 weeks to get over the thought of his death. I won't be on until later, but it you need someone to talk to let me know.

Take your time and hope you feel better,

    ~ Michael
