  1. Hey, everyone! A whole ton of stuff has been going on over the past few days. For the most part, it's just technical stuff - but there's still some genuine new features in some cases as well. Dedicated Server 2: The Unexpected Sequel First and foremost, the biggest technical change that's gonna enable a lot of stuff going forward is the migration to a new dedicated server. A little over a year ago, you may remember a post where I announced the migration to a brand new 32GB dedicated server that I was paying for myself. At the time, this was more than enough to handle all of our services with plenty of breathing room. However, as time went on, things started expanding. First, we actually started hosting the MC server for another community called Ruin Community. For those unfamiliar with them, it's one of a few MC servers that I played on back in 2012 while browsing to try and find a good server to make my home - which eventually ended up being Chaotic United. The other two being Ruin Community and Legendary Island of the Lost Treasures. Ruin had closed well before the old CU did, but Legendary Island actually persisted into 2015 before it eventually closed. However, as you all are most likely aware - I've got a compulsive attachment to things, and to the preservation of history. As they became available, I've been purchasing the domains associated with both Ruin and Legendary Island. In the offchance that some of the old members (or staff) wanted to try and check things out, I left a message with contact details on the homepage of Ruin's website. One day, I was contacted that the Ruin Community folk were attempting to re-unite and have a sort of reunion server to get everyone together again. Part of that effort was to host a private, whitelist-only MC server for the old Ruin folk - and I, being the one holding their original domain, happily offered to not only point the domain to their website, but also to point their Minecraft IP to their server as well as host it for them - no strings attached. I normally have a hard, unwavering rule about advertising other MC servers - as well as staff helping to host other servers - however, seeing as this was a server from my own childhood, it was a domain that I'd already owned for years prior, and that the server wasn't even a public server - I figured that this was a reasonable approach. If you do happen to be a member of the old Ruin Community and want to find them again, check our Partners page to join their Discord. Note that their server is NOT for any casual folk - it's intended for members of the original Ruin Community and nobody else. Anyway, with that history lesson out of the way - the other, more significant expansion was the recent move to BungeeCord. I had far underestimated the resource requirements of moving to BungeeCord - and it was at this point that Modded MC had to actually be briefly shut down, as the 32GB dedicated server wasn't enough to handle Ruin, Modded, and all the Bungee servers. However, with Modded offline, everything else was able to run without issue. That was, at least, until 1.17 - where for whatever reason, the server went from having 4-6GB free with all gamemodes online, to having 3-4 free with Minigames and the Waiting Room offline. Having modded shut off was one thing - as it never got a ton of attention. But having some of our gamemodes offline is a nonstarter. Theoretically I could tell Ruin to host their own server, but even then we'd still be at our limit - assuming that'd even do it. Plus, who else is going to be willing to either host a server with full access free of charge, or be willing to pay a monthly bill to keep a barely-played MC server up? So, instead - we made the decision to upgrade. Our old server was a SoYouStart dedicated server with 32GB of memory. Our new one is a proper OVH server - with all the modern bells and whistles. Automatic bill renewal so I can't accidentally forget to pay the bill, newer and more modern features, and in our case - an upgrade to 64GB of memory. As of now, our MC server, Ruin's server, and the donation store have been fully moved over. And of course, with this newfound freedom, we've got some new things we can do - such as... Return of Modded MC Such as turning Age of Rebirth back online! Finally! Not much has changed since the last time it was started - however, since some users had previously destroyed any hope of normal progression through more EMC generation exploits, as well as the fact that it's been down since last year - we've opted to do a world reset. The previous world is currently in the process of being archived and uploaded to the download center, and once it is you'll be able to revisit the old world anytime. Beta 1.7.3 Upgrades In addition to bringing Modded MC back online, we've also done some upgrades and updates to our Beta 1.7.3 server. Up until now, the Beta server has been kind of the forgotten child of Chaotic United. It had no real integration with the rest of the community, and barely anyone ever played on it. Even features that have been standard on our main MC server either took far too long to come to Beta (land claiming), or simply never arrived at all (dynmap). Well, thankfully, all that has finally changed. A few days ago, a user who goes by leow showed up and, initially, abused a duplication glitch and spammed diamond blocks all over the place. However, rather than stopping there and calling it a day, he reached out to me and offered to point me on how to fix it. Turns out there's a whole other world of Beta 1.7.3 servers that has been quietly brewing just out of my sight. There's a modern fork of CraftBukkit 1060 called Project Poseidon - which includes several feature enhancements, bugfixes, and optimizations. He also pointed me to a Discord centered around development for classic Minecraft - where I was able to track down and locate something I've been wanting to add to Beta for ages. Discord integration. Yes - as of now, we have a #b173-chatlogs channel on Discord, which works just like #mc-chatlogs and #rebirth-chatlogs - you can see when users join and leave, and you can see their chat messages and chat with them through that channel. But that's not all. Since Poseidon is based on CB1060 instead of our previous CB1000 build, we were able to finally introduce dynmap to Beta 1.7.3. It works just like it does on the main server - where you can see different perspectives as well as see outlines of land claims and worldguards. Another thing that we've done to hopefully ensure Beta runs as smooth as possible (as well as to allow for enough disk space for dynmap to work), is that we've moved it onto the new 64GB dedicated server. The old version of dynmap has no support for MySQL tile storage - and the VPS it was hosted on (which, fun fact - is the same VPS which hosted our own MC server for a while back during the Nuclear District days) only had 40GB of disk space - not enough for all those livemap tiles. Our dedicated server on the other hand has 2TB - which is more than enough to handle some livemap tiles. With all these changes, we've also decided to perform a world reset for Beta as well. The last reset was in 2019, so it was well past time for a reset anyways. Along with that, we wanted to introduce a world border to help keep the filesize down (and to prevent people from going to the Far Lands and crashing the whole server) - and doing this on an existing world could have made existing builds inaccessible. We plan to do a handful of other minor improvements over the coming days, most notably fixing the persistent crashing issue that happens after a while by having the server restart every 24 hours. Valheim Migration Lastly, and least notably, our Valheim server has been moved away from the old Microsoft Azure VPS and onto a new server. The IP address listed on the website and Discord has been updated, though no other significant changes have been made outside of that. With all this stuff going on, we hope that all of this will be just the start of a new beginning for Chaotic United. Whether or not it'll end up being one is yet to be seen (history unfortunately doesn't bode well for that prediction) - but for now, expect this to be the first step of many yet to come. Stay tuned.2
  2. Alrighty folks - the wait is over. Those of you who've been craving a Modded MC experience have to wait no longer - Age of Rebirth is here. We've got some big plans for the modpack as time goes on, however for this initial release we're focused on getting something comparable to a less-buggy Brink of Chaos available. Most of our ideas include more story-driven/RPG elements, but not much of this exists except for some structures here and there - and the actual premise of the modpack. You may (or may not) be wondering, how does Survival Minecraft fit into any sort of tangible or believable plot or world? Well, the answer is this: That is the description of the modpack on Technic, as well as on the modpack webpage. Several aspects of the modpack have been designed to help "sell" this premise - as you'll discover through playing. A handful of hand-made structures are placed around (with more to pop up here and there), but a number of natural structures have also been introduced - the details of which I'll let you discover on your own. There has been a fair bit of testing done, albeit this was earlier in the year. Even so, some bugs are expected here and there. If you find any new bugs, you can submit any bug reports in the Age of Rebirth section in the bug tracker. Installing the modpack is the same process as Brink of Chaos. If you need additional help installing the pack, just CLICK HERE for an installation guide. The rest of the topic will be spent on going into some of the new additions to the modpack. If you'd like to avoid spoilers, then feel free to stop reading here and go play the pack. New Features Spawn - Finally! An actual spawn! I know! Crazy to think about! It's nothing too crazy, but it's a drastic improvement compared to past spawns if you ask me. Granted, that doesn't exactly say much - but hey. Gotta start somewhere right? The main goal was to build something that properly takes advantage of modded blocks. Flans Mod - An actual wide array of weapons and vehicles! The old Brink of Chaos modpack had a "wide range of weaponry", according to the old webpage for it. Well, Age of Rebirth actually has a lot of weaponry. And vehicles. Aircraft tends to be buggy so I'd advise avoiding those, but land vehicles and handheld weapons work just fine. + Added Immersion A couple mods have been added to help increase immersion. Dynamic Surroundings adds additional sound effects such as environmental sounds, as well as footstep sounds. Fancy Block Particles makes all particles 3D instead of 2D. Most recently, we've added Real First Person 2 - which makes it so that you aren't just a floating camera in first person. Rather, you're a full person with legs, arms, and a body. It has several different modes and you can cycle through them with F1 - one of which turns it off, if you aren't a fan of it. Other New Mods Along with the highlights above, a number of other mods have been introduced, including but not limited to: Advanced Chimneys Catwalks Compact Machines Doomlike Dungeons Food Expansion Iron Backpacks MCFrames Modular Powersuits ReAuth Recurrent Complex RFTools Roguelike Dungeons Ropes Plus Tinker's Mechworks Waystones WorldEdit CUI Other Additions/Changes Custom logo/colors during Forge initialization New font used throughout the modpack New hotbar/UI design (can be disabled using a built-in resource pack) DefaultKeys mod added, which means that config options and keybindings won't get reset with each update Ding mod added to play a little "ding" when the modpack is fully booted New main menu music ITLT mod added which allows for a custom application icon and window title Bugfixes! Some of the following major issues have been fixed: Laser mod no longer mass spams console when using reflector blocks DIMENSION PORTALS WORK PROPERLY AND PERFECTLY FINALLY, NO MORE HAVING TO WARP TO DIMENSIONS Skins no longer break down and display incorrectly when switching between worlds OpenBlocks elevators now place the proper color (not craftable yet, coming soon) A couple other help topics have been posted and pinned in the Age of Rebirth subforum as well feel free to give those a look-over. Otherwise, just boot up the modpack and have fun!
  3. Hey, everyone! I think we're due for some updates as the holidays approach! New Hub First up - fitting with the holidays, we've introduced a brand new hub! That's right - not just a modified version of our current hub for the holidays, but a brand new hub. Not only that, but this new hub will continue to be in service after the holidays (with less snow and ice of course). After years of basically the same hub with minor tweaks, and continuously growing hubs, we wanted to take a step back and make a smaller, cozier hub. Along with that, we wanted to echo back to the earlier days of CU with the design - which is why the hub is once more in a biosphere. You old bois might remember that several old CU spawns were located in biospheres. We figure that such a design is fitting for a return to smaller spawns. They were dropped with the introduction of "MegaSpawn" - which was the sort of codename for the large spawn that was a mashup of a bunch of old CU and ND spawns. If you aren't able to hop on, enjoy a few screenshots of the new hub: CUAuctions Here soon, we plan to introduce a custom-coded Auctions plugin for use in Survival and SkyBlock! Auctions are a fun way to sell specific items in a bidding war! Our original plan was to find an already available auctioning plugin, but it seems that most modern auction plugins take an "eBay-like" approach, where you essentially post a listing for an item, rather than the traditional "Player has started an auction! Do /bid to bid!" type of auction. So - we'll be handling that ourselves. We don't have a release date for it set, but expect it to show up before the end of the year (unless things go horribly wrong). Status of Modded MC and Beta 1.7.3 Both Modded MC as well as Beta 1.7.3 have been neglected pretty heavily for a long time. If you haven't been keeping up on our Discord, you'll no doubt have already heard that we've been working on a new modpack to act as a successor to Brink of Chaos in order to revitalize our Modded MC offering. Brink of Chaos has been a fairly disorganized mess since its inception - in terms of mod list, server features, and even versioning. For those of you who haven't kept up with the changelogs, the versions basically jumped from 1.0.0 to 1.7.0 with absolutely nothing in between. Why is that? No idea. Apparently they were all internal testing builds? You'll have to ask the haloman30 of the past on that one. With the new modpack (whose name we're keeping secret for now), we plan to refine and redefine Brink of Chaos' goals. The initial release will essentially be an optimized and more streamlined version of what Brink of Chaos offered, acting as a foundation for the future. Fun fact - we offer a MC Beta 1.7.3 server! You may or may not have known that since we've given it next to no love and care until very recently. Originally the plan was to have it sit untouched as just "a thing that exists", similar to TeamSpeak - and while we aren't gonna be investing quite the same amount of effort into it compared to our other services, we do want to help it have a level of quality. For instance - the spawn. The previous spawn for Beta 1.7.3 was abysmal. It was trying to sort of emulate the spawn of old CU's Beta 1.7.3 spawn, except it was worse in basically every way. The new spawn actually looks halfway decent - through abandoning the original idea of making things look "from the era". Part of why the old spawn was so plain and boring is because it was built partially with the design styles that people used in the past. Which, while it can yield some good results, this wasn't it chief. The new spawn is a major overhaul - and with that new spawn, comes a brand new world on a brand new seed. The original seed was just the famous gargamel seed (though not as famous as the likes of Glacier). This new seed is a custom seed, chosen based on a community seed suggestion we did on Discord a little while back. We can't disclose the seed for obvious reason - can't have people using tools to find goodies offline! We'll be doing more stuff to Beta 1.7.3 as well, stay tuned for more details on that in the coming weeks/months/however long. A Note Regarding Minecraft/Server Exploits Something that was previously neglected from our rules (I could've sworn it was there at some point) but has technically always been a rule is regarding exploits. As a general rule, they are not allowed. If you're using something that utilized a glitch or bug in the behavior of a plugin, Bukkit, or Minecraft itself - you'll receive a warning, jail, or a ban outright depending on the severity. As an added note, since I've had some people bring up this as a defense, something being possible in vanilla Minecraft has not, and will never be a deciding factor in whether or not something is or isn't allowed. Mind you, on old CU back in 2012, you could get banned on the spot for using a piston glitch to convert stone bricks into mossy, cracked, or chiseled stone bricks (called "circle stone" at the time ). I don't plan or want to go that far, but the general sentiment still remains. Don't try and break the game to gain an advantage - you'll have to face the consequences if you do. Update Notes Before we close off, I'd like to remind everyone that we have a blog for changelogs for the website, forums, and servers! Anytime we make a change or fix to anything in the community, an entry is posted in our Update Notes blog. Sometimes these things get an announcement, but usually they don't. For example, here's a few of the noteworthy changes you might have missed out on: Nuclear District Topic Polls - Previously, all topics from the Nuclear District forums that had polls showed a random and irrelevant poll. I went through some local archives I took before ND closed to re-create the poll data by hand and point the old topics towards it. Not all topics got their polls back, but some is better than none, right? Part of an update on 11/9/2019 - Click here to read more Award Updates - A handful of awards got their icons and descriptions updated, along with having a lot of members get their awards issued to them. Part of an update on 11/8/2019 - Click here to read more /sit and Weather/Time Price Cuts - The prices for weather and time signs in Survival got cut down to $125 instead of $500, and /sit has been added to allow you to sit anywhere! (Chairs still work however) Part of an update on 11/13/2019 - Click here to read more Status Updates Block Redesign - A forums plugin has been added to make the Status Updates sidebar block function more closely to how it did back in the IP.Board 3.x days - which is arguably better Part of an update on 11/9/2019 - Click here to read more If you don't want to miss any changes, be sure to hit the follow button on the blog page! You'll get notified any time we publish a changelog. Additionally, those changelogs send a notification to #forums-feed on our Discord server - so you can keep an eye on them there, too.
  4. Right so, I've gotten back to minecraft recently and have been addicted to Brink of Chaos because of, but not only, Thaumcraft 4. As I've been really into thaumcraft and stuff, I wanna suggest adding some addons to enhance the mod; like Thaumic Tinkerer, that adds a bunch of new and cool stuff to play around with. I'd also like to suggest the addition of the mod ChickenChunks. This mod adds a block to let the chunks loaded when a player is not around, so your farm and stuff will still grow and work nicely. I don't know how this is going to work towards lag, but as not many players have been on lately I assume not many people will be using this so it shouldnt be causing any lag. Thanks
  5. Hey guys, just figured I would bring something up to you guys. For a while, we were planning on having an RPG mode for the relaunch. The idea being that it would be an experience made to be fun with, or without anyone else online. A few weeks back, we made the decision internally to push that mode off from the relaunch and slate it as something to develop post-relaunch, as such a major project would hold up the other developments which, while they will take time, will take nowhere near the time and effort needed to build an RPG world, plugins, quests, and so on. We have changed our plans once again. The original idea for the "vanilla" RPG server, along with all the lore and whatnot associated with it has been put on hiatus in favor of a much different RPG mode. The biggest difference is that this mode is being build on modded MC. I talked with a few staff about this and the thinking behind this is that it allows for a significant amount more flexibility than could ever be hoped for with plugins. With modded, we could literally hire voice actors and record real dialogue for characters during story missions (something we may or may not look into, don't hold your breath). So far, here is what I can say about this new RPG server: It, much like the previous idea, NOT be focused on standard Minecraft building and general survival gameplay It will feature quests, unlockables, and other things of the sort It, unlike the previous idea, be Sci-Fi focused rather than medieval focused It will feature brand new blocks, items, UI, and so much more I am bringing this up because I am curious to see what you guys think about this decision. As should be obvious by this point and the way things in the past have taken a 180 in the matter of a few seconds, nothing is set in stone. I am aware that by making RPG a modded-only thing, we take a significant hit to the potential player gains - both due to weak player computers as well as the much taller barrier to entry. As easy as Technic is, there are people who just won't bother putting in the time. We plan to have a healthy marketing scheme this time around as well as some promotional material and whatnot to entice players, but it won't be as much as if it was vanilla. The simple fact is there is a lot that can't be done with plugins alone. You can sort of do things, sure. You can put stained glass panes in a fake chest, all renamed to text of some sort to represent a button. This is probably the most boring and weakest example ever, but that's a simple thing you can't do on vanilla. 3D gun models? Nope, not happening. Advanced quests with waypoints and so on? If only. Custom blocks and textures alongside vanilla blocks? LOL no. That being said, this is why I said earlier that the previous RPG server has been put on hiatus. It is NOT being cancelled. All of its lore, backstory, and existing builds that have been set for it will remain on the side until the day comes that we may or may not need them. In the offchance that the old idea never gets revisited and this new project is a truly groundbreaking hit, we do plan to have these set in the same sort of universe - just in much different time periods. As such, some builds from that may be utilized in some form or fashion on the new RPG mode. But I digress, none of this is truly final. You know what that means - poll time (again)! In the poll attached, just tell me: would you prefer a modded or vanilla RPG? Medieval or Sci-Fi? Or if you have anything else to say, or maybe even some ideas, feel free to reply! Have a good day everyone!
  6. The time has come for Modded MC to return to Chaotic United! Once again, we are utilizing the Brink of Chaos Modpack - but this time around, we have included various mods suggested by YOU - the CU Community! The Modded MC Subforum has been added (and contains topics from FTB Trident, Horizons, and old BOC) and has a couple new topics added - an up-to-date list of all the mods installed, and a topic to help those unfamiliar with the Technic Launcher to get up and running. In terms of resources, you are going to need at least 4GB of RAM on your PC and a decent CPU. RAM is the biggest thing you need. If you know how Technic works, just set your memory to 4GB (or 3.5GB if you only have 4GB in your PC, or more if you have it). If you aren't entirely sure how to do this, check out this handy topic. For a full list of mods, check this other topic. As you can also see, we have a new and improved logo design for the Modpack as well! It is made to better fit what the pack overall has - technology, creativity, and weaponry. Our server actually HAS a spawn now, which is a considerable step up from the server that we tried to do before which really never had one. This modpack has been in the works since earlier this year, you may even recall BlarFlargen mention hosting it in the past. Now, the server is hosted by AwakenedRage/Kryptoaware, who while is not present on the CU Discord, still is involved in CU from the management side of things. Our server is live at mod.chaoticunited.net - but this is technically unimportant, because the Modpack ships with the server already on your server list! We hope you guys enjoy the new and improved Modded MC experience, and stay tuned as we have another server set to launch soon as well. A server really designed for a small niche audience, but something we want to bring to CU nonetheless. So, go on! Have fun!
  7. Short and sweet today folks! We are currently working on a modded MC server. Right now we are looking at four different modpacks. Just vote on which one you like best! FTB Trident: 104 Mods FTB Horizons: 131 Mods Tekkit Classic: 41 Brink of Chaos: 109 Mods
